Tom Stoppard Theatre (formerly the Duke of York's), London

The Tom Stoppard Theatre is home to RENT from 26 September 2026. Until September 2026 it was the Duke of York's Theatre, and it was renamed after the playwright Sir Tom Stoppard, whose plays have been staged here three times. You will find it on St Martin's Lane, at number 104, with Leicester Square station four minutes away.

Around 650 seats

It is small and intimate and usually stages plays, so a musical like RENT is something different for it.

There are three levels. The Stalls are our pick for being close to the stage, the Royal Circle looks down over the whole show, and the Upper Circle is the highest. Give the end seats of the Upper Circle a miss, because the curve of the circle hides part of the stage from them. Legroom is tight everywhere, and worst in the Upper Circle and the front rows of both circles. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the show, no later.

What's On at the Tom Stoppard Theatre

RENT at the Tom Stoppard Theatre (formerly the Duke of York's) is Jonathan Larson's musical, in a new production directed by Luke Sheppard. It opened on Thursday 8 October 2026. Gaten Matarazzo plays Mark, scheduled until 10 January 2027.

Evening shows start at 7:30pm, Monday to Saturday, and Fridays and Saturdays add a 2:30pm matinee. Sundays have no performance.

It's booking until 27 March 2027, and the run may go on longer.

This production adds seats on the stage itself, facing the audience and down both sides, and the RENT page covers them.

Tom Stoppard Theatre FAQs

Is the Tom Stoppard Theatre the same as the Duke of York's Theatre?

Yes. The Duke of York's Theatre on St Martin's Lane was renamed the Tom Stoppard Theatre in September 2026, two months after the change was announced. It is the same building, run by ATG as before.

How many seats does the Tom Stoppard Theatre have?

Around 640 in its normal layout, across the Stalls, Royal Circle and Upper Circle, which makes it one of the West End's smaller theatres. For RENT, with seats built on the stage and the front Stalls row taken out, the booking plan has 706 seats plus 14 standing places.

Is the Tom Stoppard Theatre in the West End?

Yes, on St Martin's Lane between Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square, next along from the Noël Coward Theatre and round the corner from Wyndham's.

Can I bring a bag to the Tom Stoppard Theatre?

A small one. Suitcases, rucksacks and large bags are not wanted, and bags can be searched at the door, so allow a moment for that when you arrive.

Can I take food and drink in?

Nothing from outside, apart from sweets you can keep in a pocket. Drinks and snacks are on sale at the bars, or scan one of the QR codes dotted around the building to have them brought to your seat before curtain up or during the interval.

Where are the bars?

The Terrace Bar is on the Upper Circle level, with a small balcony. It opens 90 minutes before the show, and it is tiny, so get there early for a good spot. There is also a bar at Stalls level.

Is the theatre cold?

Often, yes. The air conditioning is lively in a theatre this size and the outer seats near the front of the Stalls feel it first, so pack a layer. The Upper Circle can be the opposite on a hot evening, when it feels warm.

Can I buy tickets at the Box Office?

Yes, at the theatre on St Martin's Lane. It is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm, and closed on Sunday.

Can I book by phone, or for a group?

Yes to both. Call us on 020 7193 9050 and we will tell you what is left on your date and keep your group together. The price we give you is the price you pay.
