You walk in from the street straight onto the Royal Circle. The Stalls are downstairs, the Upper Circle is upstairs, and each level has Boxes at both sides. Nothing here is far from the stage.

Row letters repeat here. The Stalls, the Royal Circle and the Upper Circle each have a row A, and in the Stalls it is the third row, behind AA and BB. Look at the level printed on a ticket as well as the letter.

This is the standard layout. RENT adds seats on the stage, which the show page covers.

Which level to book

  • Stalls: our pick. Rows B to F. It is 24 steps down from the street
  • Royal Circle: great, with the entire stage in view from above, and the level you walk straight into from the street. Sit in the centre of rows A to C
  • Upper Circle: the highest level, where the row ends are the cheapest seats for the current production. A clear step down from the Stalls and Royal Circle, with the tightest legroom. Row B beats row A
  • Boxes: you watch from the side and lose the nearest rear corner of the stage. A centre seat in the Stalls or Royal Circle sees more

Legroom

Legroom is poor throughout this theatre, and worst in the Upper Circle. The front rows of the Royal Circle and the Upper Circle are the tightest of all, with your knees pressed against the wall of the circle. If you are tall, the Stalls are the level to book.

What decides the view here

  • Stalls: the person in front of you. The floor only rises gently, so a tall head can block part of the stage. Sit behind row P and a tall set can disappear under the Royal Circle. The end seats of rows C to F lose a slice of the stage to the Boxes. Stalls has the detail row by row.
  • Royal Circle: the ends of rows B and C, where the side walls and the Boxes crop the stage. Nothing above this level gets in the way.
  • Upper Circle: the first and last two seats of rows B to F. They are sold as restricted view, because the circle bends away from the stage there.

Seating Plan FAQs

Where are the best seats at the Duke of York's Theatre?

In the Stalls, rows B to F: near the stage, and ahead of the middle rows, where a tall person in front costs the most. For a view over the whole stage, the centre of the Royal Circle is the alternative.

Is it better to sit in the Stalls or the Royal Circle?

The Stalls, if you want to be close. Choose the Royal Circle if you would rather look down on the stage with nobody's head in the way: its front rows look straight over the stage, and it is the one level with no steps from the street.

What is the view from my seat at the Duke of York's Theatre?

Good from the centre of every level, because the theatre is small. The seats that lose part of the stage are at the ends of the side rows, where the Boxes, the walls and the Upper Circle's curve cut in. In the Stalls, the height of the person in front makes a difference too.
