Boxes at the Tom Stoppard Theatre

Whichever level a Box is on, you watch from the side and lose the nearest rear corner of the stage. For the current production they are not on sale.

Where they are

  • Stalls: Boxes G and H, either side of the stage
  • Royal Circle: Boxes A to F
  • Upper Circle: Boxes J to O

What you would see

You sit at right angles to the stage and turn to watch it. Some of the stage is always out of view, and in the Upper Circle Boxes it can be a lot: from one of them, the left of the stage is easy to see and the centre and right only by leaning out.

What you get is privacy, movable chairs rather than fixed seats, and more room for your legs than most of the theatre offers. In a theatre this small, the ordinary seats are already close to the stage.

What to book instead

  • Stalls, rows B to F. Square on and close to the stage
  • Royal Circle, centre of rows A to C. The whole stage below you with nothing in the way

When a Box does make sense

If the evening matters more than the view, a Box is private, and there is room to spread out. In the Royal Circle, Boxes C and F have the best angle, then B and E, and a Box bought well below top price is fair value. Pay top price and a centre seat on the same level sees more.

Boxes FAQs

Are the Boxes at the Duke of York's Theatre worth it?

Not for the view. They are side-on and lose the nearest rear corner of the stage, and in a small theatre the centre seats are already close. Book the centre of the Stalls or the Royal Circle instead, unless privacy and room matter more to you than seeing all of the stage.
