Where to Sit

Mother Russia plays in Hampstead Downstairs, a small studio with fixed bench seating, so there's no bad seat to avoid. If you need a reserved place or a seat with more support, Hampstead's team can arrange it before you book.

What's Mother Russia About?

It's 1992, and communism has just collapsed. In St Petersburg capitalism is arriving all at once: Filet-o-Fish, Latvian condoms and more brands of toothpaste than anyone needs. Evgeny and Dmitri are young men trying to get ahead in a world they don't recognise, and spying and racketeering pay best.

Their first job is to watch Katya, a sharp young woman who has lived in the West and has a past of her own. Evgeny falls for her straight away. The problem is how to tell someone how you feel when you've been listening to everything she says.

Lauren Yee wrote it, and it comes to Hampstead after a run at Signature Theater in New York earlier in 2026. Oscar Toeman directs.

Who's Mother Russia For?

Anyone who likes a sharp, funny play with a bit of politics underneath, in a small studio. Hampstead lists strong language, death, guns, violence, and references to war and suicide. It hasn't published an age guide, and anyone under 15 must come with an adult.
