What's Jumpers About?
At a party thrown by Dotty Moore, a troupe of acrobats is performing when one of them, Professor McFee, is shot dead by someone nobody sees. Dotty's husband George, a professor of moral philosophy, is busy writing a lecture trying to define Good, and the murder keeps getting in the way.
The jumpers are the university's philosophers, who double as gymnasts. Stoppard turns academic philosophy into a gymnastics display that keeps going wrong. The Times critic Irving Wardle said it had "more good lines a minute than any other modern comedy".
Who's Jumpers For?
Stoppard fans first: this is the latest of several Stoppard revivals Hampstead has put on in the winter months. It also suits anyone who likes a fast, wordy comedy and doesn't mind a bit of philosophy. Hampstead warns of murder, nudity, sexual references, an animal death and loud noises.
Jumpers News and Reviews
Jumpers hasn't been seen in London for over 20 years. The last major revival was at the National Theatre in 2003, directed by David Leveaux, which went on to Broadway with Simon Russell Beale and Essie Davis. Hampstead's production opens on 7 December 2026.
Cast and Creative Team
Casting is still to be announced. Directed by Blanche McIntyre, who staged Stoppard's The Invention of Love at Hampstead, and Stage Kiss, The Assembled Parties and Letters from Max. Casting by Anna Cooper.
