The Peacock sits in a quieter pocket of Holborn, between Lincoln's Inn Fields and Aldwych, so the restaurants and pubs near the theatre are a few minutes' walk rather than on the doorstep. These are our picks. Opening times change, so check before you set out.
Restaurants
Coopers (1 minute). Lincoln's Inn Fields, at the end of Portugal Street. The closest restaurant to the theatre, modern British with a pre-theatre menu. It's open on weekdays only, so for a weekend matinee you'll need one of the others.
Opera Tavern (5 minutes). Catherine Street, opposite the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Tapas, quick enough to share a few plates before the show without watching the clock.
Joe Allen (7 minutes). Burleigh Street, off the Strand. A theatreland institution since 1977, and a relaxed place to eat before or after the show.
Bars and pubs
The Ship Tavern (4 minutes). Gate Street, across Lincoln's Inn Fields. A proper old Holborn pub, dating back to 1549, with six real ales on and tucked away off the main roads.
The Wellington (6 minutes). The Strand, at the corner of Wellington Street. A Nicholson's pub with an ornate 1903 interior, on the walk down from Aldwych.
CellarDoor (6 minutes). Zero Aldwych, under the street. A tiny bar in an old Victorian public toilet, with cabaret most nights from 8:30pm, so it's one for after the show.
Hotels
The Z Hotel Holborn (3 minutes). 75 Kingsway. Small, modern rooms at a fair price, and the closest hotel to the theatre.
The Hoxton, Holborn (7 minutes). High Holborn, by Holborn station. A lively hotel with a busy lobby bar and restaurant, and the tube on the doorstep for getting home or onwards.
Travelodge London Covent Garden (7 minutes). Drury Lane. The budget choice, recently refurbished, and a straight walk down to the theatre.
Before or after the show
The Peacock is a little off the main West End streets, so it pays to plan the time either side of the show. If you're early, or have children to wear out first, the square two minutes behind the theatre, Lincoln's Inn Fields, has a playground and a café, the Pear Tree. Sir John Soane's Museum is on the far side of the square and free to visit. In December, the big Christmas tree at Somerset House is about 8 minutes' walk away.
