Where is the Peacock Theatre?

On Portugal Street, just off Kingsway, the wide road that runs from Aldwych up to Holborn. It's at the southern end, close to Aldwych, on the edge of the London School of Economics campus, which owns the building. It's a little away from the main West End streets, so check the map before you set off.

The main entrance is on Portugal Street. There's a second, ramped entrance on Kingsway for anyone who needs step-free access: let a member of staff know when you arrive.

By tube

Holborn (Central and Piccadilly lines) is the closest, about 5 minutes on foot. Come out onto Kingsway and walk south, towards Aldwych, and Portugal Street is on your left. Temple (District and Circle lines) and Covent Garden (Piccadilly line) are both about 10 minutes away.

By train

From Charing Cross or Waterloo it's a 15 to 20 minute walk, up the Strand or over Waterloo Bridge to Aldwych.

By bus

The closest stops are on Aldwych and the bottom of Kingsway, a minute or two from the door:

  • Aldwych / Bush House, about a minute: the 9, 23 and 87
  • Aldwych / Kingsway, about a minute: the 1, 68, 91 and 188
  • Aldwych / Australia House, about 2 minutes: the 15, 26, 76 and 341
  • Aldwych / Drury Lane, 2 to 3 minutes: the 59, 172 and 243 as well

Late at night, the N1, N9, N15, N26, N68, N87, N91 and N171 run from the same stretch.

By taxi

Black cabs run up and down Kingsway at most hours, so it's the best place to hail one, and a cab can set you down on Portugal Street outside the door.

By car

It's one of the more drivable West End theatres, sitting just off Kingsway rather than in the narrow streets of Covent Garden. There's no theatre car park, but the NCP on Parker Street, under the Gillian Lynne Theatre, is a few minutes' walk: cross Kingsway and turn into Portugal Street. There's one Blue Badge bay in front of the theatre, which can't be booked, and limited space for coaches on Kingsway and Portugal Street.

You're inside the Congestion Charge zone, which runs 7am to 6pm on weekdays and midday to 6pm at weekends, £18 a day. An evening show starting after 6pm avoids it, but a matinee falls inside it. The ULEZ runs at all hours if your car doesn't meet its standards.

What time to arrive

Arrive 20 to 30 minutes before the start. Bags are searched at the door, around a thousand people come in through the same entrance, and the Stalls are two flights down. The theatre opens an hour before each performance, and the bars open at the same time.

If you're late, you'll be held outside until a suitable break, and with so many shows here running without an interval, that can be a long wait or no way in at all. There are screens in the foyer so you can watch until you're let in.
