Charing Cross Theatre sits between the Strand and the river, with Covent Garden a few minutes north and Trafalgar Square a few minutes west, so there are plenty of restaurants and bars near the theatre. These are the ones we'd send you to. Opening times change, so check before you set out.
Restaurants
Bancone (5 minutes). 39 William IV Street, towards Covent Garden. Fresh pasta at a fair price. It closes at 10pm Monday to Wednesday, so on those nights it's for before the show.
Rules (6 minutes). 35 Maiden Lane. London's oldest restaurant, open since 1798. The one to book if dinner is part of the occasion.
Joe Allen (8 minutes). 2 Burleigh Street, off the Strand. A theatreland institution since 1977, used to people with a curtain to catch.
Bars and pubs
Gordon's Wine Bar (2 minutes). 47 Villiers Street, on the same street as the theatre. A candlelit cellar that's been pouring wine since 1890, with a terrace outside. It doesn't take bookings for the cellar, so go early.
The Harp (5 minutes). 47 Chandos Place. A small Fuller's pub with award-winning cask ale, and busy before a show, so it's one for a quick pint.
The Coal Hole (6 minutes). 91 Strand, on the corner of Savoy Court. An old Victorian pub on the Strand, and a good place to meet if you're coming from that side.
Hotels
The Clermont, Charing Cross (3 minutes). The Strand, built into the front of Charing Cross station. The closest bed to the theatre, and handy if you're arriving by train.
The Grand at Trafalgar Square (5 minutes). Northumberland Avenue. A small hotel in the old Northumberland House, with its own grill and wine bar.
Page8 (5 minutes). 8 St Martin's Place, by Trafalgar Square. A modern hotel with a rooftop restaurant, between Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden.
