Stalls at Sadler's Wells

The ground level, and the biggest of the three. It's long and fairly narrow, with no centre aisle, and the rows curve gently so the seats at the ends still face the stage. You come in at the back and walk down, one step per row.

Where we'd put you

The middle of the Stalls, from row D back to about row H. From row D each row is on a step about 5cm higher than the one in front, and the seats are staggered, so you look between the heads ahead of you rather than at them. You're close enough to see faces and far enough back to take in the whole stage.

Further back is still good. The level above starts to overhang the Stalls at row L, but it barely gets in the way until around row P or Q, where you lose the top of the stage.

What to avoid

The rows in front of row D. They're flat on the floor, the stage is high, and the seats are close enough that the dancers' feet can disappear over the edge of it. Some shows take the very front rows out for an orchestra pit, so what the front row is called changes from show to show.

Legroom

Good, by theatre standards: most people up to about 6ft will be fine anywhere in the Stalls. The seats with nothing at all in front are G4, G30, H3, H32, U4 and U31, and U5 and U30 are nearly as clear.

The slips

Down each side, close to the stage, is a raised platform of six movable chairs. They're very close and side-on: the seats furthest from the stage see the most, and lose only the corner of the stage nearest them.

Getting there, bars and toilets

The main way in is at the back of the Stalls, with one step down for each row. There's also a step-free route, past the lifts, to row J and the side seats 1 to 6. The three wheelchair spaces are in row K. The access page has the detail.

There's a bar on this level, open an hour before the show.

Stalls FAQs

Are the front rows of the Stalls good at Sadler's Wells?

Not for dance. The stage is high and the rows in front of row D are flat, so you look up at the dancers and can miss their feet. Row D, the first raised row, is a much better buy.

Are the back rows of the Stalls worth it?

Yes, for the right price. The view is clear to about row P, and from there back you lose the top of the stage under the First Circle, which matters less for dance than for most shows.
