Sadler's Wells sits between Angel and Exmouth Market, and the market is where we'd eat: a short pedestrian street of restaurants, cafes and pubs, about six minutes' walk down Rosebery Avenue. Angel and Upper Street are the other way, for hotels and more choice. These are our picks. Opening times change, so check before you set out.
Eat
Moro (7 minutes). 34 to 36 Exmouth Market. Spanish and North African cooking. Book ahead for a pre-show table, or eat at the long zinc bar.
Pizza Pilgrims (8 minutes). 15 Exmouth Market. Neapolitan pizza, quick and cheap, and open all day, so it's the easy one with children or before a matinee.
Shawarma Bar (6 minutes). 46 Exmouth Market. Rotisserie meat and mezze from the Berber & Q team, good for sharing in a group. It's closed on Mondays.
The Tamil Crown (6 minutes). Elia Street, by Angel. A proper pub downstairs and a South Indian dining room upstairs, in what used to be the Charles Lamb. It's the one to book if you want something you won't find on every high street.
Drink
The Harlequin (1 minute). Arlington Way, directly behind the theatre. A small traditional pub with a fireplace and a garden at the back, and the closest drink to your seat. It opens in the evening and is closed on Sundays, so it's one for a night show.
The Old Red Lion (4 minutes). St John Street, towards Angel. A listed pub on a site with records going back to 1415, with pizzas downstairs and its own small fringe theatre upstairs, if one show a night isn't enough.
The Exmouth Arms (7 minutes). Exmouth Market. A corner pub rebuilt in 1915, with changing ales and pub food, Sunday roasts included, and the place to finish if you've eaten on the market. Other spots on Exmouth Market are excellent too.
Stay
DoubleTree by Hilton London Angel Kings Cross (7 minutes). Pentonville Road, at Angel. The closest big hotel, on the road down to King's Cross, which suits anyone arriving by train.
Premier Inn London Angel Islington (10 minutes). Parkfield Street, by the Business Design Centre. Plain, reliable rooms at a sensible price, outside the Congestion Charge zone if you're driving in.
Hilton London Angel Islington (13 minutes). Upper Street. A modern hotel on Islington's main street, with Upper Street's restaurants and bars on the doorstep.
