Where to Sit

The Playhouse is small and close, with seats in the Pit in front of the stage and in two Galleries around it. Nobody is far from the actors, and the Lower Gallery's Boxes are right beside the stage.

What's The Seagull About?

A famous actress comes to her family's lakeside estate with her lover, a successful writer. Her son is staging a play of his own there, starring the young woman he loves, who dreams of being an actress. What starts as a play within a play turns into a story of ambition, jealousy and love that goes wrong for almost everyone.

It was the first of Chekhov's four major plays, and the Globe points out that it was inspired by Hamlet. Caroline Steinbeis directs, in a version by Rory Mullarkey. The two made Three Sisters in this theatre.

Who's It For?

Anyone who loves Chekhov, or wants a first look at him in a small theatre where you can see every face. The Globe gives no age guidance, but the play includes suicide and animal cruelty, with references to the death of a child, and under-16s must be with an adult.

News and Reviews

The Seagull opens on 15 January 2027, so there are no reviews yet. It's part of the Globe's Winter 2026/27 season in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
