Who's Christmas Carol Goes Wrong For?

This is one for anyone who loved The Play That Goes Wrong and wants the Christmas version. It's the same fictional company, the Cornley Amateur Drama Society, and this time the play they wreck is Dickens. You don't need to have seen a Goes Wrong show before, because a play falling apart on stage makes sense on its own.

It suits groups of friends and office outings in December, and families with children aged 8 and over. There's some bad language and innuendo, so it works better for older children than as a first trip to the theatre.

It isn't for you if you want a faithful A Christmas Carol. The Dickens story is still there underneath, but the show is about the Cornley company falling apart.

What Tickets Cost

The cheapest tickets are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings in January, from around £30 up to around £150. Friday and Sunday evenings in January start at around £40, and Saturdays and weekend matinees cost more.

Christmas is the busy part of the run. By late September the cheaper seats had gone on most dates between 18 December and 3 January, and prices over Christmas start at around £70. If your dates are flexible, January has far more choice.

For a group of ten or more, call us and we'll find you seats together.

About Christmas Carol Goes Wrong

The Goes Wrong shows come from Mischief, the company behind The Play That Goes Wrong, which has been at the Duchess since 2014. Dave Hearn plays Max. He was in the original cast of that show and of the BBC's The Goes Wrong Show.

This one began as a BBC One special, A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong, in 2017. Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields wrote the stage version, and Matt DiCarlo directs. It opened at the Lowry in Salford in November 2025 and played the Apollo in London the Christmas after.

What happens

The Cornley company are putting on A Christmas Carol and it's all against them: the set is late, actors go missing, and director Chris is at war with the rest of the cast over who plays Scrooge. The first half is the rehearsal, and plenty of what goes wrong there comes back after the interval.

What to know before you go

Age guidance is 8+, and children under 3 aren't allowed in. Under-16s need to sit next to someone aged 18 or over, and everyone needs a ticket.

The production warns of "moderately bad language with some sexual references and innuendo", violence played for laughs, and a moment of audience interaction in the second act.

Best Seats for Christmas Carol Goes Wrong

The front and centre of the Royal Circle gives you the clearest view of the whole set. The central Stalls put you closest to the slapstick. At the back of the Stalls, from row N, the circle above cuts off the top of the stage.

The front of the Grand Circle is the value choice. It's steep and the legroom is tight, so it's not the best level if you're tall.

Every level is covered in the Tickets and Best Seats tab. Call us on 020 7193 9050 and we'll tell you what's left on your date.

Cast and Creative Team

Dave Hearn plays Max, with James Akka as Dennis, Adam Elliott as Chris, Matthew Howell as Robert, Luke Pierre as Jonathan, Aein Nasseri as Trevor, Dumile Sibanda as Annie and Ashley Tucker as Sandra.

Tickets and Best Seats for Christmas Carol Goes Wrong

Prices depend on the date more than anything. January Tuesday to Thursday evenings run from around £30 up to around £150, all-in. The busiest dates, over Christmas and on Saturdays, go up to around £200.

Wyndham's has three levels: the Stalls, the Royal Circle and the Grand Circle. There are Boxes at the sides too, but they're side-on, so you lose part of the stage, and Boxes 3, 4, 7 and 8 are the better ones.

Stalls

The central Stalls are the closest you can get. Rows A to D are flat, so a tall person in front matters more there, and the floor rises from row E. The Royal Circle hangs over the Stalls from row K, and from row N it takes the top of the stage. Row Q has the most legroom.

Royal Circle

Front and centre of the Royal Circle is the best view in the theatre, with the whole stage in front of you and no heads in the way. Row G sits on its own at the back, and it's the one row where the Grand Circle above cuts into the view.

Grand Circle

The cheapest level. It's steep, so you see over the people in front, but it's a long way up and the legroom is poor, especially in row A. The end seats in the front rows lose a corner of the stage.

Christmas Carol Goes Wrong Reviews

The reviews are from the show's first London run, at the Apollo in December 2025, with a different company. The writers, director and designers are the same.

The Guardian's Chris Wiegand called it "a Dickensian disaster to savour" and WhatsOnStage an "irresistible Christmas treat". Both gave four stars, as did the Standard, the Times, The Stage and Time Out. The Telegraph gave three.

What the critics liked most was how the first half sets up gags that pay off after the interval, and the design, including a Tiny Tim puppet that The Stage called "giant" and "vampirish". The main complaint was that the formula is familiar, and a few said you can see some of the jokes coming.

No press night has been announced for Wyndham's. The full round-up is in What the Critics Say.
