Four levels in a theatre of 1,085 seats: the Stalls, the Dress Circle, the Grand Circle and, at the top, the Balcony. The auditorium is tall and fairly narrow, and the Stalls start at row C.

The one thing to understand before you pick a seat

At the Novello, the overhang is in the Dress Circle and the Grand Circle, not the Stalls.

The Dress Circle sits high, high enough to clear the rear Stalls, so the Stalls hold their view all the way back. What happens instead is that each level presses down on the one below it: the Grand Circle over the Dress Circle, the Balcony over the Grand Circle. So the seats that lose the top of the stage are in the circles:

  • In the Dress Circle, from about row E, and worst from row H back
  • In the Grand Circle, from row D
  • In the Stalls, only from about row S in the centre, and for MAMMA MIA! that costs very little, because most of the action happens on the stage floor or halfway up it

Should I sit in the Stalls or the Dress Circle?

The Stalls, at this theatre. The front of the Dress Circle, rows A to D, is excellent and the equal of the Stalls for the whole picture. Behind that it falls away, while the Stalls don't have that problem at any depth.

The levels at a glance

  • Stalls, rows C to X. Book the centre of E to P, or for value the centre of Q to V
  • Dress Circle, rows A to K, with slips along the side walls. Book the centre of A to D; from row E back, the level above cuts in
  • Grand Circle, rows A to H, with a slip down each side. Book the centre of B and C; further back, you lose the top of the stage to the Balcony
  • Balcony, rows A to F. The cheapest seats, very high and steep, with a double rail in front of row A
  • Boxes, four in use. Bought for privacy rather than the view

No central aisle

Every row on every level is reached from its ends. A seat in the middle of a long row means asking a dozen people to stand, so if you like an easy exit at the interval, book near an end.

Taller? The best seats for legroom

The Stalls have the most legroom in the theatre. Row C, the front row, is the roomiest of all, and there's extra space near either end of rows F and G, where no seat stands in front. Upstairs it gets tighter at every level, and the Balcony is the tightest.

Step-free seating

The Dress Circle, from the Catherine Street entrance. Every other level is stairs only. The access page has the detail.

Seating Plan FAQs

What are the best seats at the Novello Theatre for MAMMA MIA!?

The centre of the Stalls, rows E to P. After that, the centre of the Dress Circle, rows A to D. On a tighter budget, the centre of the rear Stalls, rows Q to V, still sees nearly everything.

Are there any bad seats at the Novello Theatre?

The ones to think twice about are the back of the Dress Circle, the Grand Circle from row D back, most of the slip seats down the sides of both circles, and the Boxes. In each case you lose part of the stage, either the top of it or one side.
