Fortune Theatre Seating Plan
Three levels: the Stalls, the Dress Circle and, at the top, the Upper Circle, with a Box on each side of the Dress Circle. It's a small theatre, and what you give up here is elbow room and legroom rather than a view.
Check the level before the row
Rows A to G exist on all three levels. A ticket that says row C could be any of three completely different seats, so check the level before you check the number.
The Stalls have one more trap. Row AA is a ten-seat row that sits in front of row A, not behind it. That makes Stalls row C the fourth row back, not the third, which matters when you're deciding how close to sit.
The stage is high
The stage at the Fortune is higher than usual. From Stalls rows AA to B you're looking up at it, and one customer in row AA couldn't see the stage floor at all, though there's action down there. From row C back it's no longer a problem, and the Stalls rake is shallow, so the height of the stage is what lets you see over the heads in front.
Should I sit in the Stalls or the Circle?
The Stalls, if the price is similar. The middle of the Stalls is the best place in the building, and the Stalls have the most legroom of the three levels. The Dress Circle is close to the stage and all one price, so an early booking gets you a very good seat there for the same money as an ordinary one.
The levels at a glance
- Stalls. The pick is the centre of rows C to G. The front three rows, AA to B, look up at a high stage
- Dress Circle. Rows A to G, close to the stage and tight on legroom. The lift comes up here
- Upper Circle. Rows A to G at the top, up 40 or more steps, with ironwork in front of rows A and B
- Boxes. Box A and Box B, at Dress Circle level. Room to stretch out, but you watch from the side
Taller? The best seats for legroom
This is the Fortune's real weakness. The Stalls are comfortable for most people up to about 5ft 10, and in the Dress Circle and the Upper Circle anyone over about 5ft 5 will notice it. Take an aisle seat on any level, so you can put one leg out. For real room, Stalls B1, C1, D1, E1 and K1 have nothing in front of them, and the Boxes have movable chairs.
Step-free seating
There's one wheelchair space, in the Dress Circle, reached by a platform lift from the side entrance on Crown Court. The Stalls and the Upper Circle are stairs only. The access page has the detail.
