From Waterloo station: use the right exit

It's a two-minute walk from the right exit. From the wrong one, on the South Bank side of the station, it can take more than ten.

  1. Head for Exit 2, Waterloo Road, the exit by the Jubilee line with a McDonald's beside it. Coming off a main-line train, it's the exit opposite platforms 5 and 6, down the escalators.
  2. Come out onto Waterloo Road and turn right.
  3. Walk straight ahead. The Old Vic is on the corner of The Cut, about 220 steps away.

There's a taxi rank at Waterloo station, across the road, and black cabs are easy to hail on Waterloo Road.

By car

The theatre has no car park of its own. The nearest are the National Theatre car park and the Southbank Centre car parks, by the river, and Union Car Park on Southwark Street.

The Old Vic is inside the Congestion Charge zone, which applies from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and from midday to 6pm at weekends. Arrive after 6pm for an evening show and you won't pay it; for a matinee you will, currently £18 a day. There's no charge between Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The ULEZ applies around the clock if your car doesn't meet its standards.

By bike

There are cycle racks on Webber Street, Lower Marsh and Waterloo Road, and Santander Cycles docks nearby. Bikes can't go in the cloakroom.

What time should I arrive?

Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before, no later. Bags are checked at both entrances, and if you're in the Baylis Circle it's 49 steps up.

Arrive late and you may be let in at a suitable break, but that isn't guaranteed, and some productions here, Martin Guerre among them, have no interval.
