Ivanov Tickets at the Bridge Theatre

Ivanov was due to play the Bridge Theatre, beside Tower Bridge, from 27 July to 16 October 2027, with Chris Pine as Nikolai Ivanov in his London stage debut. In September 2026 the production stopped selling tickets, and no new dates or theatre have been announced, so there is nothing to book yet.

Why Isn't Ivanov on Sale?

Trafalgar Entertainment bought the Bridge Theatre in 2026. In September the production stopped selling tickets for its summer 2027 run, and Trafalgar said it is looking at other ways to present the show. Nothing more has been announced since: no reason, no new theatre and no new dates.

It is the second time the dates have moved. Ivanov was first announced for summer 2026 and was put back a year in February 2026, because of scheduling problems with Chris Pine.

Bought tickets already? The Bridge will be in touch with ticket holders about their bookings.

Who's Ivanov For?

Anyone who wants to see a film star on stage. Chris Pine has not acted on a London stage before.

Anyone who saw The Oresteia or The Lady from the Sea at the Bridge. Simon Stone directed both.

Anyone drawn to a play about burnout. Chekhov wrote Ivanov in 1887 as a man who cannot explain why nothing appeals to him any more.

Not for you if you want period Chekhov. This is a new text in a modern setting.

What's Ivanov About?

Nikolai Ivanov is in his thirties, deep in debt, and married to Anna, who left her family and her religion behind for him and is now seriously ill. He has everything he is supposed to want and no appetite for any of it, and he cannot say why. Most evenings he is out at the Lebedevs' rather than at home, and he falls into an affair with a much younger woman.

Ivanov was Chekhov's first full-length play, written in 1887, and it sits outside the four he is known for: The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard. You do not need to have read it, and reading it will not tell you where this version goes.

About Simon Stone's Ivanov

Simon Stone works almost entirely on classical texts and rewrites rather than translates them, as he did with Yerma at the Young Vic and with Medea and Phaedra. Chekhov's plot and characters survive; the period does not.

Most of his Lady from the Sea team is back with him: Lizzie Clachan on set, Mel Page on costume, Stefan Gregory on composition and sound, Nick Schlieper on lighting.

On casting Chris Pine, Stone said: "After admiring Chris from afar for a long time it was a delight to discover that not only is he a thespian from way back but he's uniquely sensitive and brilliantly intelligent too."

Chris Pine plays Nikolai Ivanov. The rest of the company has not been announced. Casting is by Jessica Ronane CDG.

Chris Pine trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, after a year at the University of Leeds. He played The Atheist in New York in 2006 and Fat Pig at the Geffen Playhouse, did two seasons at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle award for lead performance in The Lieutenant of Inishmore at the Mark Taper Forum in 2010. All of that was in America. Ivanov would be his first stage role in London.

On screen he is the Star Trek reboot trilogy, Wonder Woman, Hell or High Water, Don't Worry Darling, and Poolman, which he also directed.

Creative team

Written and directed by Simon Stone, after Anton Chekhov. Produced by Wouter van Ransbeek. Set by Lizzie Clachan. Costume by Mel Page. Composition and sound by Stefan Gregory. Lighting by Nick Schlieper. Casting by Jessica Ronane CDG.

Clachan, Page, Gregory and Schlieper all worked on The Lady from the Sea with Stone at the Bridge.

Ivanov Reviews

Ivanov has not been performed, so there are no reviews. Any rating you find for Ivanov now belongs to a different production.

Simon Stone's first production at the Bridge split the national critics. The Lady from the Sea took four stars from the Guardian and two from the Independent, and the two were arguing about the same thing: how far he moves a play from the one it started as. Expect Ivanov to be judged on that as well.
