Read This Before You Book
This is an opera about modern slavery and human trafficking, and it is dark and uncompromising: it is meant to be hard to sit through.
The story: a couple in financial trouble find two injured angels in their garden. They take them in, nurse them, and then clip their wings and put them to work. What follows is a parable about exploitation, and it is meant to be hard to sit through.
It is also a major piece of work. The 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Music went to Du Yun for this score.
It Is Also Not a Conventional Opera
If your picture of opera is an orchestra and a soprano, this is a long way from it.
The score runs from chamber music through cabaret and electronica to punk, with spoken word alongside the singing. Director Kip Williams stages it with projection and multiple camera angles, so what you watch is partly filmed in front of you and partly live. It is closer to theatre with an orchestra than to a traditional opera.
Who It Is For
People who follow new opera, or who saw this staging when it played Manchester earlier in 2026.
People who liked the idea of opera but not the repertoire. If Puccini has never appealed, this may.
Not for a first opera, a family night, or anyone who would rather not spend an evening with the subject of trafficking.

FAQs
Human trafficking, told as a parable. A couple find two angels, take them in, and exploit them.
Yes.
No. There is no formal age guidance published yet, but the subject alone rules it out.
About 1 hour 15 minutes, with no interval. It is a shorter piece than a full-length Puccini opera.
Yes. It premiered in New York and this ENO staging played Manchester earlier in 2026 before coming to London.
The staging uses projection, so a full view of the stage picture matters more than usual. Centre Stalls or the front of the Dress Circle. See our London Coliseum guide.
Where to Sit
Centre Stalls, rows B to H, or the front block of the Dress Circle. This production leans on projection and staged camera angles, so being square on to the stage is worth more here than at a conventional opera, and the ends of the circles are less suited to it than usual.
No lift to the Upper Circle. Every other level is served.
