Who Is Matilda Best For?
- Families, and with Lion King it's one of the best family shows in the West End. Age guidance is 6+.
- Anyone who wants a serious musical. It was made by the Royal Shakespeare Company and won seven Olivier Awards.
- Anyone bringing a child who has read the book. The script is faithful where it matters and sharper where it is not.
- Less good for: under-4s, who are not admitted at all, and anyone hoping for a gentle evening. It is funny, but the show can be cruel and upsetting in parts.
What Tickets Cost
Seats run from around £20 up to around £150 for the best in the house.
There is no fixed weekday price and weekend price here; each performance is priced on its own, and weekends run about a fifth higher than midweek. The rear Upper Circle is the cheap end at £20 to £35. The value sits in the back of the Stalls and the front of the Upper Circle: both give you a very good view of the whole stage, and both cost less than the middle of the Stalls.
All-in pricing with us. Call and we will price a few dates against each other.

About Matilda The Musical
It actually began at the Royal Shakespeare Company, not in the West End. Dennis Kelly wrote the book, Tim Minchin the music and lyrics, and Matthew Warchus directed. It opened in Stratford-upon-Avon in late 2010, sold out, and swiftly transferred to the Cambridge Theatre in November 2011.
It has not left since. Fifteen years, and it is now one of the longest-running shows in London.
In 2012 it won seven Olivier Awards, the most any show had won at that point. Bertie Carvel took Best Actor for playing Miss Trunchbull, and Best Actress went jointly to the girls sharing the title role, who remain the youngest people ever to win one.
What Is Matilda About?
A small girl with an extraordinary mind, two parents who wish she were not, and a headmistress who throws children by the pigtails.
Matilda Wormwood reads Dickens and Dostoevsky while her family watch television. School gives her one ally and one enemy: Miss Honey, who spots what she is, and Miss Trunchbull, an ex-Olympic hammer thrower running Crunchem Hall on the view that children are maggots. What follows is a small girl deciding she does not have to accept the story she has been handed.
The songs carry it. Miracle opens the show, Naughty is Matilda's, When I Grow Up is the one adults tend to remember, and Revolting Children is what you're likely to be singing to the kids on the way out!
Performance Schedule
Eight performances a week, and the evening time is not the one you would guess.
| Day | Matinee | Evening |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | - | no performance |
| Tuesday | - | 7pm |
| Wednesday | 2pm | 7pm |
| Thursday | - | 7pm |
| Friday | - | 7pm |
| Saturday | 2pm | 7pm |
| Sunday | 2pm | - |
Evenings are 7pm, half an hour earlier than most of the West End, so check your ticket rather than assuming. It runs 2 hours 35 minutes including the interval, which puts a 7pm performance out at about 9:35pm.
Best Seats for Matilda
The Cambridge is an easy theatre to book well. It was built in 1930 with a new design incorporating cinema viewing, so the tiers sit back rather than leaning out and there are no pillars. Very few seats have a bad view.
Go for the central Stalls, rows D to J, seats 9 to 20. There is no centre block in the Stalls, just one long central aisle, so the aisle seats are the middle seats.
The value is the front of the Upper Circle, rows A to C, and the back of the Stalls. Both are good views of the whole stage for less than the middle of the Stalls costs.
Two warnings. The rake does not begin until row P, which makes rows K to O the ones where a tall head in front costs you most. And there is a bar across the view in Dress Circle row G that the price ignores.
Bringing a child? Booster seats are available: ask an usher when you arrive and they will point you in the right direction. Without one, a small child in the flat part of the Stalls spends the evening behind a head.
Full detail is in our Cambridge Theatre guide. Call 020 7193 9050 and we will match a seat to your budget.
Cast and Creative Team
Jon Robyns plays Miss Trunchbull, Eve Norris is Miss Honey, Matt Corner and Amy Ross are Mr and Mrs Wormwood.
Matilda is shared by Sithuni Gamage, Scarlett Lindsey and Emilia Shefford, taking whole performances in turn. Full company in the Cast and Creatives tab.

FAQs
7pm on evenings, not 7.30. Matinees are 2pm on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. There is no Monday performance.
2 hours 35 minutes including the interval. A 7pm performance is out at about 9:35pm.
Guidance is 6+. Under-4s are not admitted at all, including babes in arms, and anyone aged 15 or under needs their own ticket and an adult sitting with them. One thing worth saying: people often see this as a kids' show. It's actually great for the entire family.
Possibly, and there is an easy way round it: explain the character before you go in. She is a pantomime villain rather than a real threat, and Matilda comes out on top, so the ending is an uplifting one.
No, the theatre does not publish it in advance. Whichever of them you get is cast to carry the show on her own.
Yes. Bertie Carvel won an Olivier playing her in 2012 and every Trunchbull since has been male. It is how the part is cast, not a novelty.
No. The show tells you everything you need in the first ten minutes.
Yes. Ask an usher when you arrive and they will point you in the right direction. In the Stalls they matter.

Tickets and Best Seats for Matilda
The Stalls. No centre block, one long aisle, so the aisle seats are the closest thing to central. Rows D to J, seats 9 to 20 are the best in the building. The stage is low and the legroom is generous.
The catch is the rake, which stays flat until row P. Rows K to O are the ones where a tall head in front costs you most.
The Dress Circle. Side blocks are exactly eleven seats in every row from A to G, so the centre block is seats 12 to 26 depending on the row. The front looks straight down into the stage picture. Row G has a bar across the view that the price does not acknowledge.
The Upper Circle. Three blocks at the front, then one unbroken block from row G back. Rows A to C are the best value in the theatre. Avoid rows J and K, seats 13-16 and 25-28, which sit around the stairwells behind extra rails.
The Boxes. Stalls Box A is set into the back wall of the Stalls rather than along the side, so treat it as a rear-Stalls seat with privacy attached.
Where the sound desk sits. Stalls rows R and S are short on one side, and that is the sound desk.
Prices are in the Overview tab. All-in pricing, and any restricted seat is marked before you buy.

Matilda Reviews
It opened to some of the best notices any West End musical has had.
Charles Spencer in the Telegraph gave it five stars and called Matthew Warchus's production "thrilling, warm-hearted". Henry Hitchings in the Evening Standard, also five, wrote that "Matilda is a gem". Lyn Gardner in the Guardian, five again, found it "anarchically joyous, gleefully nasty and ingenious" and "actually richer than Dahl's novel".
Not everyone was unreserved. Michael Coveney at WhatsOnStage found "a few bumps in the adaptation" and wrote that Minchin's songs are "deficient in nothing except melody".
Then it won seven Olivier Awards, the most any show had taken at that point, and four Tonys on Broadway.
Every review, with the stars and the dates, is in one place: What the Critics Say.
