[NEWS] Ruthie Henshall and New Cast for Billy Elliot The Musical Announced on its Ninth Birthday

Billy Elliot The Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre celebrates its ninth birthday with a new cast.

Starting 12 May 2014 11-year old Matteo Zecca (Billy) and 10-year old Kyria Cooper (Debbie) will have their first performance alongside new cast members Ruthie Henshall as Billy’s dance teacher Mrs. Wilkinson, Chris Grahamson who plays Billy’s brother Tony and Barnaby Meredith who returns to the production to play Older Billy.

Billy Elliot The Musical marks the young Zecca's West End debut, becoming the thirty seventh boy to play Billy Elliot in the West End.

“I went to see Billy Elliot the Musical three years ago and I absolutely loved it,” says an excited Matteo Zecca “From that moment I wanted to be Billy even though I had never danced before!”

To fulfill his dream, he started training in ballet at the age of nine. Before being offered the role of Billy in Billy Elliot The Musical, he was a Junior and Mid Associate at The Royal Ballet School. Where he performed as a hedgehog in their production of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at The Royal Opera House in 2013.

Kyria Cooper, who alternates for the role of Debbie is equally excited for her role in this London musical. She's appeared Edith’s Harrison Performing Arts as well as in the National touring production of Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Newcastle.

Later this month, Zecca and Cooper will be joined by 11-year old Tomi Fry as alternate to the role of Billy’s best friend Michael. “I am so looking forward to joining the cast of Billy Elliot – it’s an amazing opportunity,” says Fry.

Billy Elliot The Musical tells the story of the inspirational story of a young boy’s struggle against the odds to make his dream come true in the midst of the 1984/’85 miners’ strike in a northern mining town.

Follow Billy’s journey as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that inspires his family and whole community and changes his life forever.

The other Musical in town which features young performers as its main stars is Matilda The Musical playing at the Cambridge Theatre. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory continues at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
